Ingredients
Dates,1 cup, chopped
Walnuts, 3/4 cup, diced 
Flour, 1 cup
Salt,1 tsp
Butter, 1/4 cup 
Powdered sugar, 1/2 cup
Vanilla essence, 1/2 tsp
Eggs, 1

Method
Soak the dates in 1 cup of boiling water then keep aside to cool .
Sift the flour and salt together.
Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Add the vanilla essence and the egg and beat well.
Fold the sifted flour into the butter, alternating with the dates. Stir in the walnuts.
Spoon the cake batter into a greased and lined baking tin, garnish with a few walnuts and bake in a preheated oven at 180C  for about 30 - 35mins or until the top is brown and a skewer or knife inserted into the cake comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool on the wire rack.
